A New Ti–15Zr–4Nb–4Ta alloy for medical applications
نویسنده
چکیده
V ions exhibit cytotoxicity in a culture medium from concentrations of ^0.2 mg/L. Ti, Zr, Nb and Ta are biocompatible elements. A new Ti–15Zr–4Nb–4Ta alloy for medical implants is being developed. Its microstructure, mechanical properties, corrosion resistance and corrosion fatigue properties in a physiological saline solution, biocompatibility with cultured cells, new bone tissue response through rat tibia implantation and surface modification are discussed. Medical applications will be also addressed. 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Comparisons of immersion and electrochemical properties of highly biocompatible Ti-15Zr-4Nb-4Ta alloy and other implantable metals for orthopedic implants.
Metal release from implantable metals and the properties of oxide films formed on alloy surfaces were analyzed, focusing on the highly biocompatible Ti-15Zr-4Nb-4Ta alloy. The thickness and electrical resistance (Rp) of the oxide film on such an alloy were compared with those of other implantable metals. The quantity of metal released during a 1-week immersion test was considerably smaller for ...
متن کاملOn the Effects of Hot Forging and Hot Rolling on the Microstructural Development and Mechanical Response of a Biocompatible Ti Alloy
Zr, Nb, and Ta as alloying elements for Ti alloys are important for attaining superior corrosion resistance and biocompatibility in the long term. However, note that the addition of excess Nb and Ta to Ti alloys leads to higher manufacturing cost. To develop low-cost manufacturing processes, the effects of hot-forging and continuous-hot-rolling conditions on the microstructure, mechanical prope...
متن کاملComparison of Fatigue Properties and Fatigue Crack Growth Rates of Various Implantable Metals
The fatigue strength, effects of a notch on the fatigue strength, and fatigue crack growth rate of Ti-15Zr-4Nb-4Ta alloy were compared with those of other implantable metals. Zr, Nb, and Ta are important alloying elements for Ti alloys for attaining superior long-term corrosion resistance and biocompatibility. The highly biocompatible Ti-15Zr-4Nb-4Ta alloy exhibited an excellent balance between...

Sodium titanate formed on Ti metal by NaOH and heat treatments induces apatite formation on its surface in a body environment and bonds to living bone. These treatments have been applied to porous Ti metal in artificial hip joints, and have been used clinically in Japan since 2007. Calcium titanate formed on Ti-15Zr-4Nb-4Ta alloy by NaOH, CaCl2, heat, and water treatments induces apatite format...
متن کاملImpact of Surface Potential on Apatite Formation in Ti Alloys Subjected to Acid and Heat Treatments
Titanium metal (Ti) and its alloys are widely used in orthopedic and dental fields. We have previously shown that acid and heat treatment was effective to introduce bone bonding, osteoconduction and osteoinduction on pure Ti. In the present study, acid and heat treatment with or without initial NaOH treatment was performed on typical Ti-based alloys used in orthopedic and dental fields. Dynamic...
